Yeast infection is the result of the current fungi that lives in your skin. A damp and moist area is needed for the fungi to grow. The damper it is, the more the fungi grow. When you change the position where fungal growth has taken place then you can expect a yeast infection. While the skin is armed enough to handle any fungal invasion, bacteria enters through any breaks in the skin.
Amazing but true, yeast infection is seen only in adult women, but never in children. Thrush of the mouth may occur in children but it does not affect any other part. Parents would surely have heard of any such falsehoods as their child was growing up. Children, like any of us, may be prone to be infected by Candida, which need not be only in the mouth area. These infections usually occur when the location is warm, humid and moist.

Why does yeast infection occur?

The diapers of your toddler who is just learning toilet habits would be the ideal place for Candida to settle as it simply loves a wet and warm place. Those adorable folds on the body of the child are excellent breeding grounds for Candida especially those areas which are covered by the diaper. What does it look like? Well, not very different from thrush with the same white lumpy appearance and smells a bit like baking bread. Keep your child dry and clean to prevent yeast infections, more so during the sultry summer months.
Candida prospers in the several folds of the genital area of women. This is why yeast infection is mostly seen in women. Since boy babies also wear diapers which trap heat, they are also prone to be affected. The same precautions are applicable for your baby girl and boy when you want to protect them from Candida overgrowth, since the conditions are same for its spread as diaper rash.

Symptoms warning of a probable yeast infection

The locality of the yeast infection would be the deciding factor in the symptoms. If the vagina is infected then the woman can have vaginal discharge which is thick and white or thin and watery along with a burning sensation. The most frequent symptom for oral thrush would be some thick white patches on top of swollen red skin in the mouth. The area becomes very sensitive, though it may not itch like outer skin infections, it can even bleed when the white part is removed. This causes pain while eating and drinking so young children must drink more fluids while they have this infection.
You need to remain ever alert for the early signs of yeast infections. Though potentially not fatal, it could lead to complications if you ignore it. The symptoms which are mentioned above are the most common ones however, should you require further advice speak to your doctor.
